The summer continued with a visit to the harbor to see a fleet of tall-ships and an unexpected departure to Georgia which took up five weeks! I turned 20 while down in Georgia and came back just in time to see baby saying his first words and celebrating his first birthday, and Sarah and Leah to turn 18 and 15, respectively. Life waltzed along in a at a comparatively slow pace to that I'd learned to cope with during the campaign.
Levi took his first official steps, and the girls were introduced to Smash-booking. We attended a surprise party for a dear friend, and we lived through many a day of rain for--contrary to the rest of the nation--it's been an exceptionally wet summer.
We planted berry bushes and played volleyball. I worked on my books and lived the Cossack Uprising vicariously through With Fire and Sword. We made matches and discussed hopes and dreams. There's been laughter and joy and heartache all mingled together into the goblet of this summertime. Old ways we were fond of have gradually been effaced by a new regime of blessings that will prove to be sweeter than we'd ever have dreamed. At present they may rub now and again like a new pair of boots, but we'd never trade them back.
We've sent letters and received letters, we've sung songs and watched movies. We've danced to Ella Fitzgerald and memorized songs from Wicked and Les Miserables. We've even gained a taste for country music!
It's been a long, full, summer, and one I can truly say I'll never forget. So many memories, so many lessons learned...so much life. I can only look forward with breathless, eager anticipation to see what the fall will bring.
Autumn! Fire of my heart and love of my being...I come alive when the trees kindle and the breeze carries that gypsy-chill on its breath. When the blood rushes with spices and the very leaves are blushing with pure exhilaration...

Ah summer is over. Makes me a little sad but fall, fall is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous post. It has everything a blog post should... great pictures, a hint of nostalgia, entertaining events, and the spice of great writing. For example...
ReplyDelete"the very leaves are blushing with pure exhilaration..."
Consider me absolutely bright peach with envy at that scintillating sentence. ;)
Thank you for sharing, Rachel!
Love & Hugs,
~Jewels (Not 'Jules', that's a boy name) :D
Ahh, lovely, LOVELY! What a delightful idea to post about your summer adventures! I loved reading about all that's happened to you. Amazing what can happen in only 3 months of summer isn't it?
ReplyDelete{Sherlock, had to giggle at that one. Sherlock fever has hit the nation...or at least our house. ;) Lol}
We're going to have quite an exciting Autumn as well - adventure awaits! :D I hope you have a wonderful fall season my dear too. :)
Love in Christ,
~Rachel~
Anne-girl...I am an unashamed devotee of autumn and our summers are never overly freedomish so I can't say I exactly feel you pain...still, I can imagine it, and that's worth something.
ReplyDeleteJulia: Well, darling, if I can stand the indignity of being called "Frankie" for years than you ought to be able to stand "Jules" which sounds rather collegiate than otherwise. ;) But for your feelings' and femininity's sake I'll swap. I love you, Jewels!
Rachel: You are Sherlocked too? You continue to have my undying affection.
@Everybody in general: Awesome! 3 comments on this post already. I love you!
Hehe, well, I am Sherlocked but I admit I much prefer the old classic Sherlock-Basil Rathbone. :) I like the new one too but it's not as much my favorite. Jessica and our brother Nathan are definitely Sherlocked though with the new modern one and I have to laugh every time I see one of those Sherlock pin quotes. The blanket line gets well over-used in our house. ;) "I'm in shock, look I have a blanket! Lol!
ReplyDelete{BWahaha! I just noticed your mixpod music thingy and the quote above it on your sidebar! Ha! Love that quote! LOLROF! You're so fun. So happy to have found another period drama quotesy girl like myself.} :D
Happy Sunday!
~Rachel~
This loverly new campaign of doing more commenting is making me quite happy.
ReplyDeleteAs did this post. In many, many ways. I do so love getting a peek into your life through your posts, and as Julia said you manage to put the perfect words together about the most simple things! However DO you do it???
I CAN'T WAIT FOR FALL!
I'm ready for the heat to go ... but where I live it probably will be sticking around for a while longer. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThe picture of the woman in a leaf dress and the falcon is pretty ...
I'm rather sad that summer is leaving (mainly because my schoolwork-free days went with it :P), but autumn is truly my favorite season of the year: how could I not welcome it with open arms? As Colonel Brandon would say, the air is full of spicessss. Just think: writing in the evenings wrapped up in warm sweaters and socks, cups of steaming apple cider, making applesauce and having big canning days in the kitchen, pumpkin bread (be still my heart!), pumpkin everything, for that matter, the possibility of NaNo (still thinking about that — Bree thinks I'd be absolutely insane to try for 50k with five school classes and 10+ hours of dance a week), more apple cider, orange and brown knitted fingerless gloves, the leaves all brilliantly hued as they fall to their perilous deaths, and then Thanksgiving, which is rather like the biggest, grandest gem in Autumn's crown. (How was that for a long sentence? O_o) To put it simply, I'm excited. :) Now if only the colder weather would follow; we'll still have eighty-degree days in the South until October . . . :P

All those things and more....and I entirely agree with you, Kendra, and you, Elizabeth that summer temperatures might hang on a while yet...but I hope not.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely summery of your summer. Perhaps I should write one about mine...
ReplyDeleteI loved this post. :)
ReplyDeleteI have had a truly wonderful summer. Bits and pieces of it have been swirling around in my head this week. I want to do as you have done and cast a fond glance over this past summer with a pen and paper in hand to capture the highlights for posterity.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, I am excited about fall. It is not quite fall yet, but already I can catch a whiff of it on the breeze. It won't be long...and I do love fall! The leaves, the harvests, the chilly night air, the coziness of a good jacket and the fireplace. And, like you, I have numerous possibilities of things to do in the coming months. I pray for wisdom and guidance from our heavenly Father that I make the right choices...and I am full of anticipation and hope for it all.
P.S. Who is hoping for a real winter this year?
Me! Me! Oh, I am so ever hoping for a real winter!!!
ReplyDeleteOOoh, a fun comment thread! These are so rare these days! Look, the revolution's working!
ReplyDeleteLet's see... Aww, thank you Rachel, I appreciate it! Jewels it is, and I like it muchly. :D
Oh, and... *raises hand* Consider me QUITE 'Sherlocked'!!! I have now seen all the episodes and can hardly wait until season three finally gets filmed and comes out! Why do Benedict and Martin have to be busy working on movies right now and unable to film Sherlock??? *SIGH* :D I want to see John find out Sherlock isn't dead!!
I didn't like the ep with Irene in it... :P And the "hounds" one was a little horror-ish, not my genre, but on the whole... wow. What a show. :)
And I am hoping for a real winter this year! I want me some freeze to eradicate the nasty chiggers and bugs that lurk in our woods. :D And a good excuse to fire up the wood stove. :)
Hugs!
~Julia
