Speechless

Because I know so many families in the same boat, I haven't mentioned that our family has been going through a hideous time financially. The Recession, during the first couple years, didn't seem to hit our family much at all, but as everyone--even the moneybags--had to start tightening their belts, "extras" were cut...like landscapers. And when Landscapers aren't needed anymore, that means we're out of a job. It's an old, old story and we certainly aren't the original Dorrits, and I don't like to focus on it, so I haven't mentioned it much. You know. The less you think about it, the less it bothers you.

Throughout the month of December we received SO many financial blessings that happened in crazy ways. It was humbling, truly. Sometimes it was a family we know who dropped off huge loads of fresh fruit they had picked up for their farm from the food bank. Sometimes it was the bit of money left in Dad's wallet after church on Sunday. Once it was the 50 dollar bills scattered through the house by a generous and secret giver. Once it was the freshly killed doe a friend of ours shot for us that provided 60 or 70 pounds of good, fresh, all-natural meat for our table. I have seldom felt more love and support through family and friends' generosity than I have in the past few months.

Until today.

The first few seconds of my morning were pretty much average. I slowly fluttered to consciousness and cracked open my eyes just enough to notice Abigail Taylor packing her things in preparation for going home. I yawned, stretched, and then it happened.

A scuffle downstairs.

Shouting.

Yelling.

A charge up the stairs and the sound of Dad crying.

Dad crying?

Benjamin busts into our room. "GUYS!" he yells. "SOMEONE LEFT A VAN IN OUR DRIVEWAY!"

Abby pushed past him. "AND MONEY! AND A GIFTCARD!"

My sleep-drugged brain had a hard time processing this information. I squinted across the room at Sarah who looked much like I felt. We both looked at the doorway full of excited kids. "What?" I heard Dad crying and talking to Mama in the hallway. Sarah and I tumbled out of bed and pulled on our day clothes, then spilled downstairs with the rest of the family.

"We thought it was Jehovah's Witnesses!" Abigail offered.

We stood there shivering in the damp, cold grass and stared at the beautiful 12 passenger van parked in our driveway. Inside was a gift-card and money to go out to dinner as an entire family--something we never do. And more money--enough to make our next mortgage payment.

Some of us were crying, overwhelmed by the relief and joy pouring over us--I don't know how the giver knew, but we've been out of a vehicle that fits our family since June. And we've been behind on mortgage payments. There was a card tucked in amongst the money and things. The only signature? James 1:17

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

We took it for a short test-drive--the whole family piled in the car--and bit by bit it started to sink in through my brain just exactly how monumental this gift was:

A van (with a full tank of gas)--that means that we can go places as a family without having to take two cars. We can be together. We can go on a roadtrip if we want to!

The giftcard--We can go out to dinner and not have to hope they'll give us free chips to counteract that price of feeding a dozen people.

The money-- Through the generosity of the Shadow-Giver(s), God has provided our mortgage payment this month. I hope the Shadow-Giver understands just how huge this is to Dad, especially, but to all of us. The van is an enormous gift and one that we are still in awe over. I think I'll need 3 days at least to fully comprehend it. But the money--? I know it takes a huge burden off Dad's shoulders as a provider who finds provision hard to come by.

So dear, dear Shadow-Giver....I hope you read this. Somehow. I hope you know that if you were standing here, whether you liked it or not, I'd fly at you with a hug and possibly bury my face in your shoulder and cry just because. I hope you know that you will go down in the annals of the Heffington family as a legend of God's providence. I hope you know that you made me cry and you gave me hope, and I am just praying as hard as I ever can that God blesses you beyond all you could ask and imagine. You've given us more than a van and some money, Shadow-Giver. You've given us a hug straight from God--an assurance that He's got our back and He sees our needs and understands them. You've given us a love-gift. I know that somewhere out there you are sitting back, wondering what our morning was like.
If you want to know what our morning was like, Shadow-Giver, just think of any of the most precious moments in movie history. Think of the Extreme Makeover "revealings". Think of barefooted children bouncing up and down and yelling. Think of a strong man reduced to tears and prayers of gratefulness. Think of smiles and hugs and repeated oaths of "how can this be?" In short, think of joy--unsullied, pure joy--and you'll have a general idea of the effect of your gift.

Thank you. Thank you so so much.

I know you don't want to be found out, and I respect that. But I wish there was someway I could thank you. And I pray, somehow, that I can be a Shadow-Giver too. Because this gift has been the brightest, most amazing way to crack in 2013.

Dear World {In defense of watching sunsets}

Dear, Darling,World,
Tonight I took time to lay aside my broom in the middle of evening chores and watch the sunset. A simple thing, but one that might tell a lot about a person if you'd only listen.
It is a maxim of mine never to grow too busy to watch a sunset. You see, a person who is too busy to watch a sunset now and then is to busy to live, and if one is too busy to live, then one had much better die. It sounds harsh, yes, but if you'd only bear with me a moment longer you might understand...

What do we rush through life for but to get to the end and look back with a sigh of relief? Then it is the end you are rushing after, so go ahead and rush toward it if you will. I'm afraid I take a rather Peter-Pan-ian view of this life:
Of course I want to be in Heaven with Jesus, but I am not one of those cardboard people who think this world is rotten through and through with nothing to enjoy. Heaven will be marvelous, I know. Far better than anything I've imagined it out to be. If I knew what perfection is I'm sure I'd die here and now from sheer longing to be there. But how can one be quite certain that there will be sunsets? One cannot be certain of anything on that account because there won't need to be a sun with God's glory shining. Now wouldn't it be a shame to get to Heaven only to realize that you'd missed all the sunsets on earth? Heaven will undoubtedly have things far more beautiful than a sunset, but think of the benefits of taking a bit of time to lay aside your broom! What a longer life it might give you, just because you watched a sunset. Think of it in a logical manner:

1. You lay aside your broom, therefore you add a moment of leisure to your life that might never have existed.

2. You step out onto the porch and your skin soaks in the last rays of vitamin D while you heart and soul are fed by this beauty of the Lord's making. Right there, one has ministered to all three parts of one's body.

3. You let your mind wander a little which improves brain capacity and intelligence.

4. You watch this sunset with your senses alive to the beauty of the world--the colors flooding the sky, the sound of the frogs and crickets, the feel of the cool air against your skin. Thus your awareness of your five senses will be heightened and your dinner will taste better

5. You go back inside and you are in a happier mood.

6. You finish sweeping and probably do a much better job because now that it comes to it, you can see all those spots you missed.

7. You live your life this way, stepping outside to watch sunsets. Once you get to Heaven you see there might not be any sunsets, but there is something infinitely better--you are slightly prepared for the glory by absorbing beauty in little doses.

8. You are twice the winner--you tasted heaven on earth, and you'll recognize earth in Heaven.

So you see, watching the sunsets will extend your life, make you healthy, wealthy, and wise, and all around improve you in every manner. How the philosophers would laugh at my reasoning, but I say Let Them. I guarantee that I'll be the happier by the end of this life while they argued that I was the one in error. :)

Love Everly,

not in neverland///a growing up post

my "rapunzel" year.

it was crazy.
it was challenging.
it had deep grooves, and high mountains.
at times it made me wonder why?
but in others, it fit like a boot.
it flew by so fast my head's still spinning,
and yet at points it seemed to crawl by like a southern drawl.

As insignificant as a simple number change is, I can't quite wrap my head around the fact that in a few days I will be eighteen years old.

Nope, not at all.
18.
The year I've been waiting for since I was a little girl.
The point in my life where I'd refer to as "grown up." (yeah right!)
And the end of my minor-ness.
My minority.
Argh. The beginning of my Majorly years.
(you get the point)

It's the age that I looked to as if it were somewhere over the rainbow, but in actuality, has crept up on me.
And according to the majority of people out there, it's the curtains closing on childhood.

I don't know about anyone else, but that sort of intimidates me.
Not in a scared, worrisome way really, but more in that sort of "entering the unknown" kind.
I'm definitely a creature of habit, so big changes aren't a very easy topic, even though I know they're necessary. And, because of all these diverse and interesting feelings bubbling under the crust, I decided to chronicle some of the sizeable happenings since I turned 17. :)
-said goodbye to my sweet black lab
- entered my senior year and all that jazz that comes with it
-finally got my learner's permit
-celebrated all of his "firsts" with Levi
-picked up my 15 year wish of a puppy
-joined in the excitement of a dear friend's wedding
-smiled big and watched the steady and sweet budding of Daniel and Abigail's courtship
-and am in the last days of successfully enduring a month without my 2 bestest chums ever. ;)

It's been a great year. A fantastic one, even. :) And now I'll begin technical "adult-hood".
(Just to clarify, this is not me throwing out all manner of childishness by any means! I'll be the same light-hearted, fun-loving Sarah I've always been. And truth be told, on the 6th I know I won't feel a ton different. ;) Anyways...

Here's to new seasons!

Here's to living life to the brim!

Here's to Birthdays!
"That's the funny thing about birthdays, they're kind of an annual thing."

You make me smile like the sun, fall out of bed....*insert gigantic ear-to-ear grin*

"They're a couple!!!" "A couple of what?"

And if you needed clarification, Abigail and our wonderful Gentleman are officially together! xD

**lets out very loud and very excited squeal**

Yes. We are so thankful to the Lord and the way He's working in our dear brother and good friend. :) Love you both so much and will be praying for you in this exciting season!

"Weather-wise, it's such a lovely day.."

Today is a Skittles sort of day.

**Looks outside to double check**
Mmmhhm.

It's the kind of day that feels like the summer,
smells like spring, but in actuality, is in February. ;)

The sort that makes me want to run around outside all day in barefeet.
Or simply, go and spend a delightful time on a swing under a shady tree.

It definitely is one of those that makes me want to "run and jump and butt your heads together"....
(Okay. Not quite that.)

And when you start to press your brain for what could be better about it....
you go totally blank.

Then, the first butterfly of the season flitters by, showing off it's beautiful
sunshiney color to all.

It makes me want to have my camera by my side and snap anything that pleases my eye.

It's the kind of day that makes me want to spontaneously burst out with a:

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!

Or to go around in my favorite outfit, regardless of the holes in the knees, stains, etc.

Today is the sort of day where, every single place I look, I feel the smile of my Papa all over this wonderful life.

Thank you Lord for every single reminder of Your unending,
unconditional, unexplainable love for me.

Some Thanksgivingish Thoughts ;)

Thanksgiving:
The word brings to mind thoughts of harvest time, pilgrims, family, friends, a chilly autumn day, turkey, pies, and other cozy things related to the well-known holiday.
Too often though, I think we keep it in that "holiday-ish" box.
We all know that the last Thursday of November is a time purposely set aside for looking back on all the blessings the year has had in it, and being grateful for them.
We may be able to get in a good groove of being thankful for a few days surrounding Thanksgiving...
but I'm afraid that at least I am guilty of dropping back into my self-absorbed, silly and rather ungrateful self. I'm so glad that the Bible is full of scriptures reminding us to Praise the Lord and thank Him for His goodness! Otherwise, I think I'd become too wrapped up in the concerns and details in life to ever recognize and be grateful for the *many* blessings I truly have.
My challenge to myself, as well as all of you, is to remember to thank the Lord daily for His awesomeness, power, love, salvation, and mercy He gives to all of us constantly. Because, you see, the thing is: We don't deserve *any* of it! If it weren't for the grace and salvation of God, we, as the selfish sinners we are, should be in the lowest, most terrible and dark place ever. That's what we deserve, without Christ.
But that's not where the story ends.
Oh no.
Because...

"He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our sins. The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him. And by His wounds we are healed."

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Do you see that? The Perfect Lamb of God died, so that we may have life! "By His wounds we are healed"!
So, right there I have two great examples of why I should never stop giving thanks to the Lord! He has been soooo amazingly, exceedingly, good to me, and I am so blessed!

"Oh, give thanks to the LORD!
      Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!
 Seek the LORD and His strength;
      Seek His face evermore!"

" Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
         For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
         For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
         For His mercy endures forever:"

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
      Amen.”

I hope you all have had a blessed Thanksgiving Day full of family time, laughter, love, fun, and hopefully some turkey thrown in there. ;)

Happy Memorial Day!

Hello! I thought that I'd do a quick post thanking all our troops and everyone who's served or is serving our country.
"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." - Matt. 25:40

Everybody in our military is serving us constantly, and I think sometimes we take the safety in our country for granted. Thank you Lord, for blessing our country with peace and safety!! And thank you for protecting our military and our nation. Amen.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR TROOPS!!!!!
